This is our film! It was fun to try a new style for Sometimes Funny. We wanted something a bit more heartfelt. It's cool to just see what happens in this situation. If you stick it out long enough, you can get some interesting folks to speak up.
Great point. How long were you out there doing interviews? And outta curiosity, how many people brushed you off or mocked you? I'm always nervous about putting a camera in somebody's face lol. Are they open to the idea?
We were doing interview for like 45 minutes. No one really mocked us. It's Times Square, there's so much chaos going on everywhere it's just fine.
Hey! So I was pleasantly surprised by this entry. I love him talking to his jacket at the start. It looks like you shot this very trickily ... every time you're both on screen, it's on a tripod. Methinks you're without a camera man and just being crafty! I respect that.
It's always cool to see the website on screen while I'm AT the website. The colors are great, what are you guys shooting on? I'm guessing maybe a HV30? Your audio is pretty good, is that just the mic off the camera or a boom mic of some kind?
Your focus is a bit off during the Jeffery scene. Guessing that happens because well, you don't have a camera person, haha. You guys have GREAT comedic timing and good on-screen chemistry. The old-timers around here may agree if I say you guys are sort of a UK version of the ol' On Rye LTD (a group that was also young and never failed to impress us.
"UNEXPECTED SCENE CHANGE" is great. Also, the VO audio is great. Also love the screwdriver voice over.
Found this very watchable for being nearly 6 minutes. LOVE your film group and I know we're going to see big stuff from you guys going forward!
Just wish you didn't put the credits at the end - doens't matter how fast it takes a make a film, it matters if it's a good idea and if it's executed well. You, in my opinion, had both.
Thanks Justin! Yup, no cameraman, just the two of us, a tripod and a rapidly sinking sun that made us really have to rush to get this one shot. :P
I use a Panasonic NV-GS500 (PV-GS500 in the US), which is a 3CCD camera that has really good colour and picture despite being a standard-def camera. We used a RODE Videomic mounted on top of the camera for sound.
I always always forget to focus! I need to write "FOCUS!!!" in big letters with a sharpie on the side of my camera or something, I do it every time! xD
I'm a big fan of On Rye LTD, so that's a huge compliment! Thanks a lot! :D
Sorry about the length, I never thought the film would be that long. But thank you very very much, we're definitely going to be entering more future Film Fights!
^^ oops
This was shot in SD? That's great - looks very good still. I'd always fake it on my GL1 and no one could really tell. Very tricky!
Very nice film, kept me wanting to watch the whole thing, very unusual for a short film, and very comedic. I also enjoyed the soundovers when you went back in time and the disco part as well. Good job guys! Hope to compete with you in the HW's soon!
Justin - yeah, it ain't bad for an SD camera :P
Dethbyinc - Thanks! I'll look forward to that! :D
Emmerek! You guys rock! Once again showing a very solid acting range that most folks your age don't have. Wise beyond your years!
Had some errors at the start of your film. Some weird glitches. Must have been on export? I notice this happening once and a while on your video clips as well. Not horribly distracting.
Pretty well written.
I would have color corrected this, you're getting a lot of orange tones from the lights that you have in your house.
I would have also put some kind of 'phone sounds' from the people on the other line as you're speaking to them. Would have been funny to have a Russian sounded accent and a Chinese sounding accent, and then somehow you can speak both languages naturally.
Would have liked to see the fireworks added into the shot somehow - if it was daytime you could have used the blue of the sky as a chroma key and put them in afterwards. Also, why is the sky white? haha.
"Don't forget, I also bought love." < LOL at this line, great delivery.
Think you could still use a lot more variety in your shots, go to close ups when you need them - seems like very 'one take' kind of stuff that getting some more coverage could fix up nicely. Closer shots would also give you better audio, though this wasn't terrible.
What kind of camera are you shooting on?
I give this entry a solid B-
Blank!
^oops,
were shooting on a hitatchi HDDamera, it gets the job done, the fireworks was last minute stuff, we rushed this one... I'm not sure how to color correct stuff tho, i just recently found out how to use white balance on my camera. I think were getting slightly better each week tho,
Felt this entry was a bit longer than it needed to be. This is funny, cuz it's actually a bit like our "Writer's Block" film fight.
Dig the music during the 'couch montage' I would have put another way to show time in there ... like a clock ticking or something along those lines.
I like the angles you have when you're filming the compputer. Also, the graphics for the fake 'idea bank' site are GREAT. Unless it's a real idea bank site ... which could totally be the case.
I'd cut quicker to you on the phone - or maybe overlay the sound of you on the phone as you're looking at the screen. Would also be nice to have 'beeping' dial sounds as you dial. Seems like there's such little talking in this it's kind of odd.
Love the quick shot of the phone buzzing. Sad music coming back at the end is a nice touch as well. Ends kind of abruptly for me. No credits or anything?
A pretty good entry from you, I'm seeing some improvements.
I'd give it a C rating.
Never thought about using a clock along with that shot. That would have been a good touch. And yes, I made the "Joe's Idea Bank" site, just by some simple clip art in iWeb.
And I totally agree about the talking. I couldn't really decide at the time how to do it with more talking, or how to do it with less.
Thanks for the feedback!
Hey guys! Good showing last fight, though you def could have got more votes. Promote yourselves! It's the key to winning!
Awkward camera movement in the start - would have been worth running through another time.
"Fag" - ha, this guy is edgy. I like your casting. His hair is pretty intense.
I love the added touch of another guy standing behind them in line.
You're REALLY breaking the '180 rule' here. The characters should keep looking the same direction as they speak to each other. So, the sales man should always be looking from RIGHT as he speaks to your two characters, who should always be looking LEFT back at him. It keeps it visually consistent and easier for the audience to track what's going on.
Just think of a scene having a half circle around it, that once you start filming, you can't break. I was guilty of this many a time in the past, and once you start noticing it, you start to clean up your act right fast!
Here's a wikipedia article on it which can explain it better than I could:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/180_degree_rule
Love the shot at the end in the best buy - it's great that you guys are always shooting in stores, haha.
Some technical issues marring this - overall the acting was passable, and the idea pretty funny.
I'd give this a B.
I love how you used your sickness to drive your character in this. This brought me back to that great CF spot you did oh all those years ago. That blue suit is awesome. Was that a part of your halloween costume?
I like the potion shots.
I think you're repeating the 'cartoon eyes' a bit much. We get it! Cartoon eyes! I kind of wish that the voice over audio at the start would sound a little less polished and a bit more 'recorded' - I think there's def a difference between a character's inner monologue and us hearing a recording from a tape.
LOVE the craziness of the cartoon eyes segment. It's that little extra dash of weirdness that takes this to the next level (much like the 'back in time' shot in Envelope's flick). Motion tracking looks GREAT. God I love motion tracking.
When it cuts back to him/you in the car with the horn honking, love that brutal transition. The woman speaking on the phone while we watch him all comatose is GREAT. Hah. And sort of tragic at the same time.
Del shot this? Pretty awesome. Didn't know Del was a SHOOTER! Looked good. It's hard for me to give up behind the camera work - I just don't trust too many people and it's distracting when I'm trying to act ... thinking about what I'm going to have to edit with when all is said and done, heh.
YO DAVE! I am SO GLAD you submitted. This is a charming and fucked up film. Hopefully you're glad you submitted to - what a trooper, pushing past the sickness. You rock dude. This new 'David Seger' film group is gonna do big things, I can tell.
I really loved this entry. Something completely original that is totally entertaining. I love the abrupt cut from the character's fantasy to the inside of the car, that was perfect. I also enjoy how you mixed the voice over with what was going on, and added the cartoon clips too. Everything about this was incredibly well polished.
