The Expendables
Genre: AnyRules: You know that AMAZING ACTION movie coming out? Called "The Expendables"? We want your take on the TITLE of the movie; what else or who else is expendable? No action allowed.
Oh my gosh. This is one of my favorites. Dude, Griffin we both need to grow moustaches. Is that thing for real? I fully believe it could be. Don't think I didn't catch the "One Trick" ham.
I love how multiracial this guy's kids are. This family needs a whole backstory! The floating sandwich effect looks flawless! The sound effects are spot-on as well. I need to know more about how you pulled this off!
A+
Yes, real moustache. Growing/wearing it for Movember, to raise awareness and money to fight men's cancers.
Glad you caught the subtle "One Trick" mention.
To get a better look at how I shot the effects stuff, I show a couple extra shots on Vimeo, in the credits: http://vimeo.com/7781476
Another highly disturbing video. I see that you have 'auto' on for your camera. I don't approve of that. I DO approve of Dustin because Dustin is awesome. And I very much approve of Rex's wonderful voice. I think the timing between the turkey talking and Dustin's replies could be a bit tighter.
I wish the girl wasn't laughing at the end!
I rate this a B! very fun
I knew I should have been louder. I wasn't trying to laugh, I was trying to make sounds of shock, and it just didn't work. I'm telling Dustin we have to make a re-cut.
Clarity is BACK in the heavys!!! The husband actor is great. I love the shot of the ball slowly rolling - there's something cute about that. Way better than just a static shot. I love how the kids in the laughing shot look totally weirded out. The laugh at the end is great. I feel like your white balance might be a little bit off. Overall, I dig this sick n' twisted film
I rate this a B+ !!!
First time seeing you guys. I LOVE IT! Your audio quality could have been better / louder. Great setup in the room. Your actors are good in this. The camera jiggle on "WHAAAT!!" is PERFECT! Feels like an effect right out of District 9. Where is that stock bloody goo from? Freaking FUNNY ending. I think people are going to welcome you here with open arms ... at least until you beat 'em, haha.
Overall I give this an A- !!!
Thanks a ton for the support man. I can't tell you how awesome this site is. I'm glad you thought the acting was good because its actually me and Phil the other member of our team, we're super low budget haha. Video copilot has an awesome set of action elements like blood, fire, explosions etc. Thanks a ton for support and I already can't wait to do another one.
By the way, our handle is misspelled and i dont think I can change it on my end. any help?
Hey, speeding Turtles! Nice film group name. Great audio quality on your voice over. Not sure why you don't have any audio for the rest of it. Would love to hear the -CRASH- of everything hitting the floor. Interesting how you cut the first three shots to "this. is. doug." I think it's a bit quick and jerky to start the film out with, but interesting nonetheless.
You've got some major focus issues going on here - make sure your camera person is checking up on that.
It's very odd that the camera lifts up off the ground after the paper is kicked. I would have cut to a shot of him walking away, and then slowly panned down to the sad hand turkey.
You've got a good start here, I'm sure you'll figure out some awesome stuff for next month!
Thanks. I've never really worked with focusing things, but I guess we will learn how to focus well for our next fight. Thanks for the feedback. The voiceover was done through imovie with the built in microphone on my friend's macbook.
In retrospect I would've definitely kept in some of the sound, but I think some of the sound I didn't like at some points so I took it all out. Now I realize that was a bad decision.
Ya live and ya learn my friend!
"Smoking Satan's cock" is such an intense line. I like the look of your lead actor. I think you'd be able to use him in a lot of other cool stuff. Looks like a great 'tough guy' character.
I think the opening shot is VERY strong. Opening to some dude taped up, getting slapped ?? I mean that's a great attention-getter.
Obviously having the last shot of blood splattering all over the wall would have been ideal to wrap this one up. Like the lines, but could have used better audio quality on the guy speaking, and maybe a couple shots to setup where they were (dark cellar? creepy school building? shack in the middle of the woods?)
Thank you for the review. :)
Careful with your submissions being the right size. Should be 640x360 with no padding on the sides. I like seeing someone do animation - I feel it's not used enough on the site! This guy was a bit short for our normal mini-fights, which are supposed to be 30 seconds.
If you're blowing up a turkey I wanna see some turkey bits flying everywhere! Who is Todd? What's his deal? Why does he like walks? Who exploded him? Lots of details you could hvae used the extra 15 seconds to explain. "BUT THEN WE WAS EXPLODED" does make me LOL a bit, haha.
So, obviously you know why you're in the LWs! Way too long, haha. I like your hats, I like the location. I like the accents.
I still haven't seen "Castaway."
You've got a bit of an error cutting "I don't need" is repeated twice, and the response. Your character should also already be walking away from the camera instead of at a dead stop when we cut to him.
Last line is pretty great.
Emmerek! So, I'm not going to lie, I was on the fence with this one. Now, don't get me wrong, I LOVED it. especially the explosion at the end. You really freakin' sold that jump. I just wish you would have explained the world a bit more at the start --- even if it was a quick voice over that said "in a world overrun by turkeys..." to set it up without having to read the info.
I love the thumbnail graphic too. Cool to see people being more creative with them and using them as 'title cards' with credits and stuff like that.
The 'smoke' on the gun is a lot better than your first entry. Looks great, it's the extra little stuff like that that takes it to the next level.
"I've been bitten by a turkkkeyy!" haha, love this line
Would have liked to see some kind of muzzle flash or 'blood' sound effect when Jonny shoots Emmerek. I'm not sure why the turkeys are dropping bombs on people, but even a cheapy composited shot of you looking up at the sky and seeing a swarm of turkeys, or the sound of a thousand wings flapping ... SOMETHING to sell the story that these turkeys are dropping bombs. Or maybe it's the government dropping bombs to clear our all the 'infected'? Explanation at the end would be nice.
So congrats on your first HW!!! Don't think you can sit back and relax next time though, I'm still going to be picky as ever.
I rate this a B-
This video is not only awesome, but has a lot of useful information. You guys are certainly white ... your rhythm is way off, but that's part of the charm. White like the meat. I LOVE the poster frame, haha. So epic. The autotuning is pretty classic, who did that?
Overall I give this a B!!! Entertaining watch for sure. We got double the Rex this fight! So awesome!
I did the auto tuning. Unfortunately I am not that great at it, and it threw out timing out of sync. I think I just need the right program to make it work good. I used garage band.
Hey guys! Some very cool shots here. I like your color correction, but it seems like it's a bit scattered. Dark here, light there, green here, blue there. Best to keep one the whole way through.
Love the shiny bucket shot. Love the axe. Love the "TURKEYY!!!" line. I'm not sure if you were trying to make a 30 second trailer here or what. Very scattered. Some good shooting through, and I think you guys could do something very cool with a longer format, and more explained plotline.
Welcome to Film Fights!!
Thank you for your comment, it is very helpful. I think we would do better with a longer format, plus we were short on time because we filmed it all yesterday and edited it all today. Thanks
Cloverfield style is awesome. I think the statis is pretty good. I dunno if the 'please stand by' should be off center like that. I forgot how they did it in Cloverfield. I also wish there were more digital effects that could replicate actual 'tape distortions' - it always ends up looking fake - or a filter that replicates the weird blocky Mini-DV errors.
Anyway, thought this was very very cool and it's too bad it didn't come in sooner! The CG is great too. I like the little details like the 'happy thanksgiving' text on screen and the proper date up in the corner. The decimated dinner table is a great shot. Assuming you shot this after your actual thanksgiving!
Good use of subtle sound effects on the turkey moving around, etc.
Overall, I would have made this a HW if it was in on time. I may yet change my mind, who knows!?! I'd give this film and easy A rating. Looking forward to seein' ya next time!!!
Also, I may want to contact that CG dude - could use some mad skills like that.
Please do, I'm sure he'd love the offer of more CG work. Thanks for the feedback, quite happy you considered it worthy for the heavy weight section (feel free to add it to said section, lol). Also with regards to your statement about the table, we didn't use it following our own Thanksgiving because we're actually all Scottish, glad we fooled everyone though (hope accents weren't insulting). I had to double check when Thanksgiving fell so as to get the correct date, which I'm glad you noticed. Anyway, thanks again. Chris

"Woo Hoo! Thank you to all of you who voted for our film. We are really excited as well as surprised by the win. With all the obstacles we faced in this fight we feared it wouldn't be as greatly acceptedd as it turned out to be.
We are very happy that we were able to fight our way up, with your help, from Middleweights to this. We are looking forward to the coming fights and hope we can continue producing quality films for your entertainment. Thanks for the compitition and we hope you all keep bringing it.
Special Thank You's: Audra - for helping on such short notice. Everyone who said we needed to be bumped up a weight class. Jake- For overseeing the whole operation in Justin's absence.
"That's a Wrap".
