Valentine's Day Haiku
Genre: Video HaikuRules: Create a Valentine's Day themed VIDEO HAIKU! A video haiku is a 3 shot film. 1st shot is 5 sec, next shot is 7 sec, final shot is 5 seconds. SEE EXAMPLES HERE: http://bit.ly/s34Fmc
This isn't a BAD entry ... but it suffers from a lot of editing problems. Like, the intro, showing this dude putting on his belt, tying his shoes - maybe if there were credits during that sequence, and some music it'd be acceptable, but as it stands now it's very much like "Ok, I get the point, he's getting ready for work ..." feels like a waste of time. Same with the guy walking to get the door - you're WALKING the audience through everything step by step, when you don't have to do that. People know he's going to walk to the door and answer it, they don't want to watch the whole thing happen.
This could have been cut down to about a 1 or 2 minute movie and it would have been HW most likely.
Another huge pet peeve of mine, is bloopers. Half this movie is bloopers, and there's almost no transition between the END of the film and the start of the bloopers. Unfortunately no one cares about bloopers except the people who make it themselves. It's a fine thing to make as an 'extra' on your site, but including it in the video itself is just ... kind of dull. So please, if you're going to add them in, only one or two, not basically raw footage.
Oh GOddddammmnit.
I just wrote a huge review and the second I click submit, the site goes down for a second, just to friggin' spite me. That was mean, website.
So, basically I said - I liked the 'inconveniant' line - I liked that you used multiple cameras FOR REAL - the villian was in a cool area wearing appropriate garb, but I wish the audio on his voice was better.
And the MAIN thing this needed was music! Music would have made it move and flow so much better, music would have also masked the buzzing from the camera recording. Music would have made this go from a very good entry, to an excellent one.
So, in summation, don't forget about music!
5 Clover! Always a real treat to see a 5 Clover Flick.
Your Chloe wasn't quite as petulant as the real Chloe.
Is this "Jill Mason" supposed to be related to George Mason from the first season? If so, I commend your reference to earlier characters!
The 24 music is perfect, obviously.
The 'basement' set looks EXACTLY like something they'd have on the show - same with the office setting, etc. Good work finding pitch perfect locations.
Isn't the computer character from the cover of some old-school video game?
Acting is a little wooden, but I guess that's kind of what happens with just kind of random actors. It's not bad, but the delivery is just ... dry ... kind of lifeless.
Nice cliffhanger - just like my boiiiiizz at 24 would do it.
I want to use Wallyville water-based lubricants!
I'm saddened you weren't able to enter this into the real fight. But better spotlight than never I say.
I love the 'schtupping' line - very genuine delivery.
I better make a 'no sister fucking' policy with my friends, because they're always hounding after them - at least in my mind.
Your roomie did a wonderful job - I think you could have used him in more 'studio sounding' voice overs instead of just using him in sections where we actually see him.
That's so many frizbees! You must have a collection.
Odd that "Erik" is cut off - actually all the text on the bottom is kind of cut off - you didn't notice that in the editing?
ALL the flashback sequences are spectacular. The porn - hilarious. Great writing on this.
You really added a lot of cool stuff since the rough cut I saw initially - great work. I look FORWARD to working with you when we move my friend. It shall be a great collaboration of minds. I need a fresh jolt of creativity.
Do you guys do a lot of skate filming? I say this because fish eye lenses are typically a skate thing, not really used in a lot of other films. I'm down with the wide-angle though, I love the 'look' it gives.
Good FX work with the dude in the jar.
I like that you dubbed over the critter voice instead of just having them talk in the rabbit head. Maybe you could have dubbed over the other lines as well to make everything sound a little better?
Dig the music.
Animation - a different stab at the topic.
I like it because it definately seems more 'comic booky' - It would have been pretty easy to say the lines instead of having it all up in word bubbles, I don't totally see the point of that. Maybe so it can move faster?
You've got a cool style, I like the art, just wish there were more 'film' elements to it instead of just being like a slide show.
Very cool idea - I like that you used a digital zoom in the freeze scene to make it seem less like it was just a still frame. Trickery!
I would have rather had the guy move around on the green screen instead of just being in the same place every time - also your transition was a little ... too cheesy. If you wanted to be cheesy I would suggest a clock wipe or ... something along those lines.
I'd like to see some more resolution as to what happened after this dude got all this money and did all these things - but you only had 4 minutes so it's forgiven!
Nice intro music - is that from Unsolved Mysteries or something? Good editing, the mix of BW and color is interesting.
I feel like this could have been the start of a good serious film, so it's kind of funny that you took the comedy twist to it, but you bring up all this mystery and suspense pretty well at the outset - I would have rather seen you keep on with that serious feel and have a cool serious ending instead.
