When compared to many of the other entries, an ending where he doesn't shoot himself becomes a twist ending. Depression can be hard to show on screen. Many times the character will just look tired or like a they just don't care. Keep the "180 Rule" in mind. Your character was looking in the opposite direction for nearly scene. If you don't tell it with words, then it has to be told with visuals. Make them clearer next time.
Well good for you for not doing the cliche' blood splatter shoots himself ending! Love the bench shot and the music was great!
Thank you! We felt that him being alone inside his head was depressing enough that we didn't need to kill him off. The focus isn't losing it and pulling the trigger, but having the fortitude to put the gun away and try life again in the morning.
This film was an accurate and compelling look at Bereavement. There were important clues you gave your audience that your character lost his wife recently. For example, he is wearing a wedding ring, the decor of the bedroom is feminine, there is a Christmas tree still up in their kitchen, photos of his wife at work, and the most obvious the photo on their night stand. Great use of props to tell a story that has no dialogue. A young wife dies and is survived by a husband who adored her and their pet wolf. Todd Hanson did a convincing job portraying the deep loneliness one feels after losing a spouse. His life is on autopilot and he just goes through the motions of his everyday existence. A beautiful story of grief and how life goes on because it has to, not because he wants it to. Well done!
Tell me again why this one wasn't a heavyweight. Seriously, I didn't see anything other than (maybe) the dog but I think that would be nitpicking.
I loved this film. Some great shots and in the short span of time we were able to learn more about this character than in most short films of it's kind. Seriously, this one deserves to be a heavyweight.
