First off, WELCOME TO FILMFIGHTS! LOVE the shot at 0:19. Very nice, almost looks like a dolly shot. This looks like it was filmed on a Canon HV-series camera. Am I right? Love that you actually stuck the car out in some kind of icy wilderness. Brings me back to being in Wisconsin and driving, so crazy.
Felt this dragged a bit long - BUT, that was probably what you were looking for ... that feeling of isolation. You kept it on time limit which is very important. Great shots of the sky and seeing it get darker. More than anything, you guys made HW for very nice shot selection, simple idea well execute.
What I feel this is missing is really showing us that it's Christmas. Calling his parents ... calling his girlfriend ... why isn't he using his cell phone? Why is he forced to be out in the cold the whole time? Lots of elements you could have explored in this.
I give this film a B.
Oh, and since you've in the fight, make sure to go through the other entries and leave them a review as well!
Yeah it was actually shot with a JVC Everio GZ-HD7 and a Sony Handycam DCR SR47 for the interior. Also yes I did use a dolly in that shot. The same one that Indy Mogul built.
Thanks for the feedback. I guess it wasn't clear that he we trying to get reception with his cellphone in the dolly shot.I think maybe if I had done a shot of the cellphone up close showing it had zero bars it might have been more clear. Also maybe if I had wrote Merry Christmas in the glass instead of making a smiley face it could have shown that aspect a little better.
I dug it a lot.
Even though it was what I was expecting from the prompt: a montage of someone who is lonely or isolated, I liked this one a lot! It was filmed really really well and the music was just perfect. Thought it was great. Reminded me of "Into the Wild" a bit, for some reason.
I wasn't thinking about a "Into the Wild" feel at the time, but your right. It does. You know, without the whole being poisoned and dying thing.
Hahaha, exactly. No poison, no dying. But like, the feel of when he gets to Alaska. That's more what I meant.
Was the very beginning of this shot stop motion style? That has me a little confused, maybe something int he conversion made it jumpy, because I don't see that style anywhere else. I appreciate your dedication being out in the shitty weather, for what seems to have been a long time. Pacing is real slow. I think a lot could have been trimmed from the middle. Ah, someone rescues. Nice of them. Is it Christmas? Some really beautiful shots. Usually not a fan of "silent" movies, but I think that worked for this one. I really think this was a great idea with high production quality, but needed to be paced faster.
Haha yeah were in the middle of nowhere all day. It was like 10 below with the wind chill.
I've been told a couple of times that the pacing is a little slow, but I really don't think the full impact of being stuck like that would get across...
Anyway thanks for watching.
I know how you feel. I can watch one of my movies over and over and they seem to fly by. Then I show someone else, and catch them not paying attention halfway through. It irritates the shit out of me sometimes, especially when it's close friends who I would think would be interested. It has made me pay closer attention to trimming out everything I can for these small minded internet folks like myself. :)
nice film, some very good shots, especially for establishment at the beginning. I think some of your intro shots could have been steadier, even dragged out more while a lot of your progression shots in the middle would have served the purpose better shortened quick shots built into a montage. While you are creating the idea of desolate loneliness we don't have to be there every minute with the character. A varied montage showing a variety of activities situations, locations in and around the car would still carry the idea of lonely hopless desolation without boring the audience. The flow overall was smooth but i agree with the others, a little long. I liked what you did at 1:52. In fact going along with that you needed more interesting eye catchers or emotional shots. I know it was pretty short but there was no real progression of story here. we open with him stuck and the entire story is just him stuck and being bored. Might not have seemed so slow if more stuff happened, maybe if he tried like some other stuff to get out or something changed around him like delving more into him trying to survive the midnight winter temperatures: I think you had more potential there then you showed. Don't rely too much on a story where something, or even nothing happens to the character, try to build drama with or around the character to keep audiences wondering "What happens next? rather then "when's something going to happen?" I'd give this a C because there were several interesting shots especially at the beginning and the concept was good, original just not carried out as well as it could have been.
This...unfortunately...bored my socks off to watch.
Shots were set up nice. angles filmed inside the car were off the hook awesome. The story itself took to long to develop, especially with no dialogue.
(gotta tell ya...i been in this dudes position...stuck in a ditch in the snow sucks!)
I felt like this one dragged on a little. The idea is very good, I would have never thought of this. Maybe to give more of a lonelyness feel you could have added a really far away shot of the car. Music was very dramatic, the way it was progressing i thought that this was going to turn into a "castaway-esque" film, that would have been different, overall, very good
awww you got now to work with. no fair. I really like the shot at the 55 second mark. The shots for this one are seriously amazing. Its hard for me to not like this one.
I enjoyed it. Ran a bit slow for my taste, and didn't really catch onto the Christmas vibe. Points for hanging out in the cold.
