""Dale and Steve Find The Source"" by Off-Red Eye Productions - Reviewed on October 9th, 2005

Okay, from the start, I dislike this video. Please realize, I go into every viewing with an extremely open mind, but it doesn't help that the very first line is completely incoherent. (Something about an "ordinary beverage?") This is then followed by a character development consisting of two CGs, horrible audio (recording and editing) and an ugly 180˚ rule infraction (you should ask what that is on the forums.) For a second I thought the band music would be a great sound bridge into a scene set in the band room, but alas, it was there for no reason. The scene that follows, though, is the best scene in the video - where he comically reasons that getting to the bottom of the mystery and simply coping is more important than treating the gonorrhea. Funny. All in all, it was mildly entertaining because of the high school wackiness, and the only reason I rip into it so much is that the flaws are simple technical ones, and paying attention to things like good audio and shot composition could help you make your humor come across in a stronger way.

"Dale & Steve: The Milk Mystery" by Cake Bake - Reviewed on October 9th, 2005

In a lot of ways, this is a great video. I feel like I must have watched one of your other videos somewhere somehow, because I remember appreciating the patient, clever dialogue. The audio is a little rough, something a noise reduction might help. (What makes the noise worse is that every time you change the voice pitch, the pitch of the noise changes too, so it alternates between a low hum and a high fuzz.) Anyway, with the exception of the ending, which was over my head, the dialogue is great (way funnier than the other videos this week, in a very subtle way), the animation is perfect for this sort of thing, and I like how you turned the concept of the mystery into something very mundane and domestic. Good job!

"Dale & Steve" by Brazen Films - Reviewed on October 9th, 2005

Sometimes I like watching something that makes little sense and crams as much swearing in as possible. For this reason, I actually watched all 5 minutes. The satan guy is pretty funny, so again, a reason to keep watching. Otherwise, the audio (as if I don't harp on it enough) needs help, so does the lighting, but the shot composition is actually pretty good. (I do have to mention, though, that it's a cop out to put a quiet music track behind the whole video. It's like saying the video is otherwise too uninteresting without constant background noise. And maybe it is.) I did find it somewhat entertaining, but the main problem here is that there is barely a semblance of the fight you entered this week. Yes, the video does appear to be titled, "dale & steve," and yes, there are characters named Dale and Steve (albeit one is a rabbit), but there is certainly no mystery (just a short moment of climatic suspense), and no coming of age theme. If I were Justin, this would have been a lightweight.

"Dale & Steve's most excellent Epic" by Kim Jong Lee - Reviewed on October 9th, 2005

I'm glad I just watched the Rok parody on the forums the other day - otherwise I'd have no idea what was going on. For lightweight humor, I like how you used this as an intro into an entirely different video. In general, I have trouble forcing myself to watch any lightweight (and many poorly done heavyweight) videos that exceed four or five minutes, and in the case of your video, I didn't sit through the whole thing. I don't mind watching nonsensical stuff (which is what a lot of this week is), and you guys are fairly comical, but I don't understand why videos that make little sense always have to be so long. Why does everyone spend so much time producing a lengthy video when there isn't very much content?

Thank you, gentlemen. This is one of my favorite videos this week. Obviously, it's a sucky lighweight video, but it has so many positive qualities that put it on some levels higher than some of the heavyweights this week. Firstly, it's short and sweet. I'm glad I didn't have to sit through ten minutes of this. Secondly, you establish the characters ("Hey, Dale") and the mystery ("Why is the sky blue?") very quickly, effectively, and coherently. This puts your story structure way above the competition. Also, you guys actually project your voices so the camera can hear you. Dumb, but great job doing it!

"Dale and Steve!" by Kevs Krazy Krap - Reviewed on October 10th, 2005

Hey, I'll keep this short, but I appreciate this video for the fact that it sticks very close to the true essence of what I believe Justin intended for this fight. I expected the use of younger siblings from someone, and you did that, while also parodying the kind of corny brotherly interaction you might see on a 90s sitcom. In any event, I won't go into great detail about the whole of the video, just that this is a prime example of how much improvement could be derived from some better lighting and cleaner audio.
